I was up Snowdon early this morning to see the progress on the weir and was amazed to see the detailing and joinery skills required to build the weir. It’s a few weeks of work and a lot of measuring and level setting. After all, this work will dictate the water levels in terms of ‘the hands off flow’ (the amount which ‘has’ to be left in the river) and the amount the turbine gets. Get the form-work (the wooden template for the concrete) levels wrong and we either don’t have enough water in the river to get our abstraction licence or the turbine will not be operating effectively both financially and generating enough energy . We only have a few weeks left and the site starts to be put back together. The landscaping, mitigation work (stone work) and general tidying starts in a few weeks. From the sunny flanks of Snowdon I then travelled done to S Wales for a round table discussion with the new Natural Resources Wales environmental body. The point of the meeting was to discuss the new bodies approach to hydro and initially the implementation of the new hydro guidance. Interesting meeting and the main recommendation was to develop some form of advisory body to assist them in this task. (practicalities, highlight opportunities, best practice and generally share from the coal face) Much more to come on this I’m sure
