we need to figure out where 2Gwh of energy is is going?
Yesterday Paul and I finally got our finger out and started working on one of the latest mansions to join NT Wales portfolio. Tredegar House is a stunning mansion just outside Newport in S East Wales. This is a house of conundrums for your keen environmentalist. water, waste and energy. Energy seems to be one of the first conundrums to get our heads around. Something does not add up and so it’s a time for digging and to get under the skin of the site. The site uses over twice what our biggest site in Wales does and yet this is not that big a site. The 2Gwh of combined energy use per annum has the potential to de-rail our all Wales energy efficiency commitment but something does not add up? The energy use is way too large for this size of mansion and so the hunt for Kilowatts begins. Whats using them? (are we supplying someone else?) or are we using them? (i.e. are the meters wrong). Firsts things first… we need to get measuring and monitoring to know where we are starting from? (can we trust the meters?)
All sorts of ideas flowing around energy efficiency, electricity generation and heat generation but the exciting stuff will have to wait until we crack the “can we trust the data?”

Mr Southall has started to look at the issue of water management. Along with Dinefwr Estate Paul is leading and assisting on developing an integrated water management plan. It always amazes me the sheer effort put into managing water on old estates. Miles of pipes, ducts, leats, ponds, cisterns and so on. Tredegar looks to be a big challenge to understand fully and then come up with a sensitive future management plan. The property team have a good handle on whats what on the site. It’s now a mater of ‘whats’ to do next?
